Centre for Aerospace Structures, Colorado

17 February 2004

The Process

The Centre for Aerospace Structures use the ICEM CFD tools for the generation of tetrahedral meshes that are used by their flow solver. They usually receive the CAD model as an IGES file. They then import it within the DDN software to verify its integrity. Once the model has been cleaned up, they define element sizes on the curves, surfaces and volumes of the model within the MED software. Finally they use the TETRA software to generate the volume and surface meshes. For viscous applications, they add several layers of prismatic elements (that are converted into tetrahedral) near the solid surfaces with the Prism software.

The Benefits

These are the benefits that the ICEM CFD meshing tools provide to them.
- user friendly
- always produces a mesh
- fast turnaround time
- good smoothing and mesh repair capabilities
