Dynamic Analysis of Vacuum Skid Platform by Wilde FEA

05 March 2007

BOC Edwards is a leading manufacturer of high quality vacuum components and systems. Wilde FEA were asked to investigate the dynamic characteristics of a machine support platform. Potential vibration problems were identified and various modification options were proposed.

'The job was delivered on time with a very proactive approach from their engineers. Subsequent tests on the machine have proven the model to be accurate and allowed the design to develop.'
Technical Manager, BOC Edwards

It was required to perform dynamic analysis of the platform in order to identify any potential vibration problems likely to occur within the operating range of the machine. Through use of FEA, the company aimed to avoid a resonance condition with associated high noise levels and reduced fatigue life.

The FE simulations were conducted using ANSYS v10. The model of the platform was generated in sufficient detail to enable accurate determination of natural frequencies. The model consisted of the frame structure and concentrated masses representing the attached machines. The dynamic analysis indicated potential causes of vibration and were used as the basis for design improvement recommendations.
