 | Numerical Methods in Geotechnical Engineering Course (3 days)
Tuesday 12 June 2007 - Golden Tulip Manchester
First Announcement
Course Aims
This 3-day course between 12th-14th June aims to highlight the application of FEA in geotechnical practice and to illustrate, through practical worked examples, the benefits and limitations of this numerical method.
Who Should Attend
The course is aimed at practising geotechnical and civil engineers who wish to learn more about finite element analysis (FEA) techniques applied to geotechnics. The course content will be relevant to current and potential users of simulation software and associated consultancy services.
Background
For over ten years this course has been held in the Netherlands and around the world. During this time, it has developed an excellent reputation and has always been well attended by participants from consulting and contracting companies of all sizes, public work bodies and universities. Following the success of previous UK courses, the course will again be held in Manchester in 2007. As usual, the course will consist of a balanced mixture of lectures and hands-on computer modelling workshops. Both lectures and exercises will concentrate on advanced geotechnical engineering topics.
Workshops
The hands-on exercises will be performed using FEA to reinforce the concepts described in the lectures and to illustrate the potential pitfalls to avoid. For this purpose the PLAXIS FEA program for soil and rock mechanics is well suited because of its ease of use. This will allow more time for teaching and tutoring on the geotechnical aspects of numerical analysis rather than concentrating on the operation of the finite element program itself.
PLAXIS 3D Foundation in 2007
The course will also cover the PLAXIS 3D Foundation FEA program through a lecture and a workshop. Together, these will provide background and practical hands-on experience of full 3D modelling and analysis of foundation related problems.
