 | Afternoon Seminar - Introduction to Geotechnical Finite Element Analysis (London)
Tuesday 22 May 2007 - London
An opportunity to learn about the benefits of using numerical methods to solve practical geotechnical problems. These afternoon seminars will introduce the various aspects of FEA applied to geotechnical problems. The seminars will be followed by an in-depth 3-day training course on Numerical Methods in Geotechnical Engineering in June 2007.
(Note that this event was previously scheduled for 18th April)
Background The development of dedicated software packages, coupled with the availability of powerful yet inexpensive computers, is leading to an increase in the number of companies of all sizes that are using finite element techniques to analyse their geotechnical applications.
Users of Finite Element Analysis (FEA) are able to: - Predict the ground movement, structural deflections and loads with accuracy - Remove many of the conservatisms that are inherent in classical techniques - Overcome the limitations of empirical methods - Carry out sensitivity studies to bound the effects of material property uncertainties - Calculate the correct combined behaviour of a structure and the ground - Account for the interaction effects of adjacent structures
Seminar Content Delegates who attend the seminars will learn about the benefits of using FEA for solving geotechnical problems. The seminars will consist of a mixture of lectures and interactive demonstrations using the PLAXIS 2D & 3D software packages. The following subjects will be covered: - Background to finite-element based geotechnical analysis - FEA considerations for 2D & 3D geotechnical analysis - Practical examples illustrating the above
All delegates will receive a full working version of PLAXIS to keep**.
Who Should Attend? The seminars are aimed at practicing geotechnical and civil engineers who wish to learn about finite element analysis techniques applied to geotechnics and available tools. The presentations will be relevant to current and potential users of finite element software and associated consultancy services.
