 | Profits through Engineering Simulation for Business Leaders - NAFEMS Seminar
Wednesday 03 October 2007 - Knutsford
A Breakfast Meeting for Business Leaders
Event Type: Breakfast Meeting Location: Knutsford,UK Date: October 3, 2007
Who Should Attend?
The seminar is aimed at senior decision makers, such as MDs, Technical Directors etc. The presentations will address the business issues associated with Engineering Simulation.
Summary
Most businesses who are involved in producing a product are faced with a number of major business challengers, including;
- Increasing competition - Increasing expectations of value, - Quality expectations, - Increased customisation, - Model proliferation - resulting in shorter useful product life, - Less time to Get to the Profit stage, - Less time at the Profit stage.
These challenges require businesses to make more and better products faster and at less cost, delivered to the market timely; products that customers can differentiate from other products and products that appeal to them.
With so much proliferation and so many choices on the market, differentiation and brand identity become more important than ever. Engineering characteristics in products, such as engine sound, interior noise, handling performance, and weight often form part of this product differentiation, but are also often required to satisfy regulations.
Operating costs are often a critical consideration, e.g. reducing fuel consumption. This can be achieved by introducing new materials, which often introduces more unknowns and often requires engineers to understand the trade-offs between superior product performance and increased risk.
Risk is now a major consideration in product design, where warranty coverage is often a selling feature. A product which incurs high warranty claims can make the difference between a profitable and an unprofitable product.
All of these things that engineers can do to increase their contribution to product value; increased brand identity; response to regulations; the introduction of new technologies and the sensitivity to risk, all require new, innovative ways of going about product development.
Innovation is about new ideas. Applied to business, innovation is about bringing new and better products to market faster; especially compared with the competitors. Recent research has shown a close correlation between companies rated as 'most innovative' and their value as measured by the market capitalisation. The same research also identified a cross-section of executives identified innovation, product and process innovation, as their greatest concern for future success in the market.
Simulation has, and will continue to play, a major role in product and process innovation. New ideas have to be tested, qualified and refined before they can be put into practice or introduced to the market.
The uptake in engineering simulation varies considerably, from companies who now consider simulation as a vital part of their product design process to those companies who are not yet using the technology. The NAFEMS 'Profits through Engineering Simulation for Business Leaders' seminar is aimed at both of these groups;
- Are current users using simulation in the most effective manner? - This often requires a change to product design/business processes. - For companies who are considering using the technology. What are the benefits? What are the 'hidden costs'? - Such as training of staff. How do they evaluate the software options?

The seminar will be held at Booths Hall, Booths Park, Chelford Road, Knutsford, Cheshire WA16 8QZ.
