Wilde Events from Wilde FEA
Numerical Methods in Geotechnical Engineering Course (3 days)

Tuesday 17 June 2008 - Manchester

Course Aims

This 3-day course between 17th-19th June aims to highlight the application of FEA in geotechnical practice and to illustrate, through practical worked examples, the benefits and limitations of this numerical method.

Who Should Attend

The course is aimed at practising geotechnical and civil engineers who wish to learn more about finite element analysis (FEA) techniques applied to geotechnics. The course content will be relevant to current and potential users of simulation software and associated consultancy services.

Background

For over ten years this course has been held in the Netherlands and around the world. During this time, it has developed an excellent reputation and has always been well attended by participants from consulting and contracting companies of all sizes, public work bodies and universities. Following the success of previous UK courses, the course will again be held in Manchester in 2008. As usual, the course will consist of a balanced mixture of lectures and hands-on computer modelling workshops. Both lectures and exercises will concentrate on advanced geotechnical engineering topics.

Workshops

The hands-on exercises will be performed using FEA to reinforce the concepts described in the lectures and to illustrate the potential pitfalls to avoid. For this purpose the PLAXIS FEA program for soil and rock mechanics is well suited because of its ease of use. This will allow more time for teaching and tutoring on the geotechnical aspects of numerical analysis rather than concentrating on the operation of the finite element program itself.

PLAXIS 3D Foundation in 2008

The course will also cover the PLAXIS Foundation 3D FEA program through a lecture and a workshop. Together, these will provide background and practical hands-on experience of full 3D modelling and analysis of foundation related problems.

Presenters

Dr Harvey Burd
Lecturer in Engineering Science, Oxford University
Harvey has been a University Lecturer at Oxford University since 1987. His principal current research interests are the modelling of tunnelling operations in urban areas, soil nailing and pipe jacking. His experience also includes a wide variety of consultancy projects.

Dr Minna Karstunen
Senior Lecturer, Civil Engineering, Strathclyde University
Minna has been a user of FEA since 1990 and a developer since 1993, with research focusing on constitutive and numerical modelling of soft and/or unsaturated soils. Her industrial experience relates to the design of roads, tunnels & bridge foundations on very soft soils. She is the coordinator of EC-funded AMGISS Network (Advanced Modelling of Ground Improvement on Soft Soils), in which PLAXIS is used as the computational platform.

Peter Scott
Geotechnical Group Manager, Buro Happold Ltd

Peter has over 25 years experience in civil and structural engineering. Working for several leading consultancy firms he has acquired geotechnical expertise in infrastructure, buildings, landslips and deep excavations. He promotes finite element analysis as the primary design tool for geotechnical specialists, and has led the foundation design for the Millennium Dome and the British Museum, as well as major overseas projects.

Dr. Ronald Brinkgreve
Plaxis Technical Manager/Delft University, Plaxis BV
Ronald has worked on the development of Plaxis since 1989. He obtained his PhD based on Geomaterial Models and Numerical Analysis of Softening in 1994 and started as R&D Manager at Plaxis. Since 1997 he has lectured at Delft University of Technology on soil modeling and has published extensively on various aspects of FEA for geotechnical engineering and design.
