 | Standard Course on Computational Geotechnics (3 days - 23rd -25th June)
Tuesday 23 June 2009 - The Village Hotel, Cheadle
Course Aims
This 3-day course aims to highlight the application of FEA in geotechnical practice and to illustrate, through practical worked examples, the benefits and limitations of this numerical method.
Training Dates
Tuesday 23rd - Thursday 25th June 2009
The course begins with registration on Tuesday morning and ends with a final session on Thursday afternoon.
Training Venue
The training venue is The Village Hotel, Cheadle. Conveniently located between the City of Manchester and the Peak District National Park, the Village Hotel Cheadle is ideal for both course participants and fresh air seekers.
Delegates staying at the hotel will enjoy free internet, a bar and restaurant and exclusive leisure facilities; including 25m heated indoor pool, fitness and aerobic studio, sauna, steam room, gymnasium and squash courts.
To take advantage of the Wilde preferential rate quote "DV4932690" when making your hotel reservation.
Alternative hotel accommodation is also available near to the training venue; contact us for details.
Who Should Attend?
The course is aimed at practising geotechnical and civil engineers who wish to learn more about finite element analysis (FEA) techniques applied to geotechnics. The course content will be relevant to current and potential users of simulation software and associated consultancy services.
Background
For over ten years this course has been held in the Netherlands and around the world. During this time, it has developed an excellent reputation and has always been well attended by participants from consulting and contracting companies of all sizes, public work bodies and universities. Following the success of previous UK courses, the course will again be held in Manchester. As usual, the course will consist of a balanced mixture of lectures and hands-on computer modelling workshops. Both lectures and exercises will concentrate on advanced geotechnical engineering topics.
This course was formally known as the "Numerical Methods in Geotechnical Engineering".
Presenters
Dr Harvey Burd Lecturer in Engineering Science, Oxford University Harvey has been a University Lecturer at Oxford University since 1987. His current research interests include the modelling of tunnelling operations in urban areas and the development of improved forms of ground penetrating radar to identify buried assets. His experience also includes a wide variety of civil engineering consulting projects.
Dr Minna Karstunen Reader, Civil Engineering, University of Strathclyde Minna is a Reader at University of Strathclyde and the leader of the Infrastructure Research Group. She has been a user of finite elements since 1990 and developer since 1993. Her industrial experience relates to the design of roads, tunnels and bridge foundations on very soft soils. Her research focuses on constitutive and numerical modelling of soft and/or unsaturated soils, considering the effects of anisotropy, structure and time-dependence. Currently she is finalising the negotiations for an EC-funded Industry-Academia Partnerships and Pathways project (GEO-INSTALL) in collaboration with e.g. U. Stuttgart, TU Delft, U. Stellenbosch, PLAXIS, NGI, Keller and GeoDelft Innovations.
Peter Scott Technical Director, Buro Happold Ltd Peter is Technical Director for Buro Happold ground engineering. He has over 30 years experience and has acquired geotechnical expertise in many sectors of civil engineering, including infrastructure, buildings and deep excavations. Particularly for urban and complex design projects he promotes the adoption of quality site investigation and the use of finite element analysis as a primary design tool. He has worked in many parts of the world contributing to the successful construction of high profile projects in areas such as USA, Middle East and UK.
Dr Paul Bonnier Plaxis BV Paul has worked on the development of Plaxis since 1988. He obtained his PhD from Delft University of Technology based on numerical analysis of bituminous materials in 1993 and started working on the scientific development of Plaxis. Since then his work has involved the development and implementation of a wide range of subjects in finite element method for both 2D and 3D applications, including several constitutive models.
Workshops
The hands-on exercises will be performed using FEA to reinforce the concepts described in the lectures and to illustrate the potential pitfalls to avoid. For this purpose the PLAXIS FEA program for soil and rock mechanics is well suited because of its ease of use. This will allow more time for teaching and tutoring on the geotechnical aspects of numerical analysis rather than concentrating on the operation of the finite element program itself.
PLAXIS 3D Foundation in 2009
The course will also cover the PLAXIS 3D Foundation FEA program through a lecture and a workshop. Together, these will provide background and practical hands-on experience of full 3D modelling and analysis of foundation related problems.
Comments From Previous Delegates
Below is a selection of comments from last year's delegates;
"This course has provided a good basic knowledge into the theory behind FEA and the use of Plaxis. I am looking forward to being able to use the software in an actual situation" Kathryn Holroyde - Halcrow
"The workshops were very good" Razvan Ignat - Skanska, Sweden
"I enjoyed the organisation of the course i.e. having the theory behind the problem followed by workshop. All lecturers were very useful." Abir Osman - Atkins
"A very technical and thorough course dealing with the full remit of knowledge required to firstly understand Finite Element Analysis and then use with confidence the Plaxis software". Andrew Brunsdon - Capita Symonds
"The course was very well taught, with excellent notes." Stylianos Panayides - Newcastle University
"Great course!!" Garth Brownsword - Mott MacDonald
Certification
Upon successful completion of the course, delegates will be issued with a Certificate of Attendance; attendance on this course may contribute towards CPD (Continual Professional Development), please check with your Institution.
