CFD: Colour For Dummies or Creative Force for Design?

Wednesday 10 February 2010 - Barton Grange Hotel, Preston

This evening presentation is being held in association with the IMechE and the IChemE.

Seminar Outline

We all know that CFD stands for Computational Fluid Dynamics, i.e. using a computer program to simulate fluid flow. Some cynics would have you believe that it really means "Colour For Dummies". This jaded view typically comes from hard-nosed engineers who have seen CFD used by the marketing department to generate pretty pictures to impress their customers, whilst being denied the opportunity to acquire it in the design department. Occasionally, it is shared by those who have spent good money, only to be given a statement of the obvious by, backed up by colour plots.

The speaker, as you might expect, has a different view. This seminar aims to show how CFD can stand for "Creative Force in Design". What differentiates this perspective is that CFD is never used for its own sake, but rather to add value, either by providing insights that are otherwise unobtainable at reasonable cost, or by generating a characterisation of a piece of equipment and using this in a design tool or a broader model of system behaviour. Both approaches are clearly focussed on the design process.

Drawing on a 25-year career in engineering simulation and design consultancy, Dr Leefe will illustrate this theme with examples from a range of engineering disciplines, covering the use of CFD for diagnostics, technology development, equipment and process evaluation and scale-up.
